Re-visiting the educational Value of Museums – Connecting to Audiences
Education is a well-developed field in museums, still they have to work with and respond to ever-changing needs and demands from their audiences. Who are they, what are their needs and how can museums better connect to them? NEMO’s annual conference offers the opportunity to discuss such questions with decision-makers from museums and museum organisations from all over Europe and connect directly with the EU level involved. The conference will take place in Pilsen, this year’s European Capital of Culture. Friday’s programme is located at Beseda, originally built as a cultural space for concerts, balls and theater in 1901 it has become a well-used venue for many events in the city.

Bologna 8 October 2015

We was at The international conference “The Creative Museum”, within the framework of the EU funded project bearing the same name. The conference is organised within the framework of the EU funded project “Creative Museum” which explores the potential of digital technologies to find new ways of interpreting museum collections.

The project explores the potential of digital technologies applied to museums and seeks to connect the Maker Community and digital industries with museums and museum practitioners to explore new ways of interpreting collections.

Following this WORKSHOP:
Museomix: giving space to the community
Museomix: giving space to the community Museomix wants to develop a strong and sustainable community. For that, Museomix promotes a « self-sufficient » model where the community “takes care of itself” and whose members are, at the same time, beneficiaries and contributors to the commons. In that model, coordination is useful to support this autonomyin order to : • identify and define the latent needs • identify initiatives and emerging opportunities • involve stakeholders and integrate the actions (management dashboard) • facilitate procedures and access to existing resources • monitor the progress and developments of projects • facilitate close networking connections • encourage and facilitate mutual aid within the community (activation of a mentoring program) Facilitator: Juliette Giraud, Museomix, France. Working languages: English and French

6 March 2015, 9:00-17:00
Bologna, Terza torre , Viale della Fiera 3

Museums can be perceived as solemn, grand and outdated places.
The congress is approaching the question “Can museums play?” based on this impression and will explore the relationships that can be created between museums and play. The avant-garde art of the 20th century was often inspired by means of play. This created a kinship, which can be mirrored today to approach art in unconventional ways. How access to museums and their collections can be created through play will be discussed and shared by the speakers.
The congress will be streamed live on http://videocenter.lepida.it

twitter #museumsplay

Added value How can play broaden the assortment of services provided by the museum?
Storytelling How can play highlight contents and differences in a collection? How can you turn characteristics of objects into play?
Participation How can play increase the number of visitors and how can they become expertly visitors
Outreach How can play nurture the outreach of museums beyond the obvious and familiar?
Communication and Education How can play enrich methods of education and communication? Can it help discover the museum through arousing emotions, inspiring new approaches and helping understand the past?

SMartART partecipates at NEMO 22nd Annual Conference on 6-8 November 2014 in Bologna, Italy. “LIVING TOGETHER IN A SUSTAINABLE EUROPE – MUSEUMS WORKING FOR SOCIAL COHESION”

Starting from the central assumption that museums can play a central role in society, what can they do in times of economic and social stress (just to name a few issues hyper-nationalism, inter-religious problems, social tensions, political polarisation, emphasis of most European policies on economics and competition, movements against foreigners), areas where politics have failed to develop and respond with appropriate instruments, where civil society organisations and culture in particular, might have a better position to act on.

In addition, more generally, we want to reflect on the role and contribution that museums can provide to making life in cities sustainable, to reinforcing cohesive social fabric, to building strong and reflected identities, to offering opportunities for self-expression and self-determination of different sections of the population, including various disadvantaged groups.

How are these questions embedded in the vision of the “Project Europe”; was does Europe hold for citizens, for museums? How can the museum sector, the museum community contribute to the European values, which models and ideas are transferrable and which visions should be adopted by museums at large when reflecting on their role for society. These questions are debated in particular in connection to Italy holding the EU presidency during this period, explicitly having on their agenda the topic of culture contributing to sustainable societies.
